About the Neighborhood

HISTORIC BLACK WILLIAMS PROJECT
30 mounted signs and 10 sidewalk tiles honor the role Portland's Black community played in the history of the Williams Avenue district. These markers were designed by local artists and unveiled in 2017. Download the exhibit map from PBOT
here and make a day of it!

PAST AND PRESENT
Historic photos and a memorial to past residents are on display at New Seasons Market and Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. Check out the free self-guided walking tour created by
Eliot Oral Histories or the OPB documentary 'Portland Civil Rights: Lift Ev’ry Voice' for more history of the neighborhood, too.

PUBLIC ART
In 2025, Williams Avenue gained two new public statues - a saxophone and an owl - made by Portland artist Travis Pond. The saxophone recalls the era when Williams Avenue was a hub for black musicians, and the owl connects the musical ‘notes’ to the Williams Wishing Tree.

WISHING TREE
Make a wish on Williams District's Wishing Tree. Write down your heart's desire and tie it on to the tree to help your wish come true (4048 N Williams, between Shaver and Mason St).

ARCHITECTURE
Architecture fans love walking our leafy streets and discovering the well-preserved examples of Craftsman, Bungalow, Neo-Classic, Four-Square, Victorian, and other classic-styled houses and churches, especially during festive holiday seasons!

DAWSON PARK
A long-time central meeting place for the neighborhood, Dawson Park features interactive play and water pieces and a beautiful gazebo topped by a historic district dome. Enjoy the mature trees, picnic tables and open space with room to run around and play. After shopping in the district, grab something delicious to eat and relax in the park.

DIVERSE MAKERS
From bags to bikes to boxes, Williams makes it all. Long a hub of creativity, Williams District is home to a diverse variety of makers, craftspersons and artisans. Mixed in amongst the shops and businesses you will find the work of more than 50 local female makers and designers.

SUMMER CONCERTS IN THE PARK
Dawson Park and Unthank Park host free summer concerts throughout the year. Check their calendars for more details.
